What Is Traditional Rug Hooking?

The creation of hooked rugs is a very old art. In Canada, rug hooking has been a part of the culture since the time of the early settlers.

Discarded or outgrown clothes were cut by hand into strips, which were then hooked into a burlap sack, producing impressive rugs for cold floors.

Today’s rug hookers usually cut woolen fabric with a special cutting machine into strips. This wool is then hooked into background cloth to result in a wall hanging, cushion or floor rug. Contemporary rug hookers use a variety of materials and techniques.
